Cycling and cruising from the 'green heart' to the coastal
sand dunes to discover the charm of Holland
Discover antiquated Dutch towns, castles and ports and experience the
beauty of Holland's lakes, beaches and sand dunes. This itinerary ventures
into the 'green heart' of the Netherlands to gain an insight into the country's
highlights with its historic towns and picturesque countryside. From
Amsterdam we board our barge and after exploring the city's canals we
leave it behind for the tranquility of the Dutch countryside. Cycling through
quiet lake areas we experience the medieval centres of Haarlem and Leiden
at handlebar level. We explore the scenic north with its ports, including
Hoorn, where we discover the spirit of the Dutch Golden Age.
ITINERARY: DAY 1 | Arrive & cruise Amsterdam canals, short cycle along
Amstel river (20km) 2 | Cycle to Leiden (55km) 3 | Cycle past seaside & dunes
to Zandvoort & Haarlem (50km) 4 | Cross North Sea canal by ferry, cycle past
rural villages to the cheese town of Alkmaar (50km) 5 | Cycle to unique wood
& dune area (Bergen and Schoorl villages), relax on a terrace or beach (55km)
6 | Cycle past windmills of Schermerhorn toHoorn (45km) 7 | Cycle along IJssel
Lake en route to Amsterdam (50km), evening walking tour 8 | Trip concludes

We uncover the highlights of Holland and Belgium on this unique cycling tour
of the lowlands and North Sea coast. Beginning in Amsterdam, we visit Gouda
– well known for its cheese – and then cycle to the world famous windmills
of Kinderdijk before heading through Dordrecht and the natural reserve
of Biesbosch to Willemstad. We continue by barge across the impressive
waterways of Zeeland and onto the lively town of Antwerp in Belgium. In the
delightful Ghent we have awalking tour before continuing to Bruges where small
chocolatiers and waffle sellers offer a great reward for your cycling efforts!
ITINERARY: DAY 1 | Join barge in Amsterdam and cruise to Oude
Wetering (10km) 2 | Cycle through Dutch meadowlands and onto Gouda
(40km) 3 | By barge to Kinderdijk, cycle to Moerdijk then sail to Willemstad
4 | By barge via the impressive waterways of Zeeland to the lively Belgian
town of Antwerp 5 | Cycle to Dendermonde (50km) 6 | Cycle the Flemish
countryside to Ghent (35km) 7 | By train to Bruges, guided tour and free
time before returning to Ghent 8 | Coach transfer to Amsterdam, trip
concludes. Note: trip operates in reverse each alternate departure.
