Enjoy the peaceful tranquility of Dorset coasts and hills
The richly varied landscape and the historical treasures of Dorset have
inspired generations of authors including Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and
more recently John Fowles who wrote 'The French Lieutenant's Woman'.
The film of this book contained a famous scene of Meryl Streep walking
along 'The Cobh' at Lyme Regis, which is where we start our walk. You can't
walk far without encountering places immortalised by Hardy in his Wessex
novels and 'Far from the Madding Crowd' is still an appropriate description
of the many rural villages which lie peacefully unspoilt in Dorset's hidden
valleys and rolling hills. This walk will take you past fossil‑encrusted cliffs, to
the huge Iron Age fort of Maiden Castle, to the beautifully preserved village
of Abbotsbury which does not even have street lighting as well as to Hardy's
Cottage and past the natural arch of Durdle Door to Lulworth Cove, a sandy
bay ringed with magnificent cliffs.

EnjoySouthernEngland'scoastaltowns

rolling landscapes
100 miles of chalk downland walking separates the Victorian seaside town
of Eastbourne and Winchester, the ancient Saxon Capital of Wessex and
England. This outstanding self guided itinerary through the region follows a
107 kilometre route to Cocking. Stretching over a rare area of outstanding
natural beauty in Southern Britain, the walk generally follows the chalk
(
soft limestone) ridge just to the north of the popular seaside towns on the
Sussex and Hampshire coast. Most of the route is ancient, made up out
of the old droving roads that took animals and goods between the market
t
owns of the region. On the way 'Dew Ponds', ring forts, cross dykes and
t
umuli reflect a history stretching back into the mists of time. This extended
i
tinerary in the South Down will allow you to reach Old Winchester Hill, where
y
ou'll meet with views extending as far as the Isle of Wight on a clear day
before continuing along an arable landscape to Winchester.
