Cycle from Vienna to Budapest
along the Danube cycle path
The Danube, Europe's second longest river, courses through ten
countries en route to the Black Sea. Follow the winding route of
the Danube and discover the lively history of one of Europe's most
important rivers by bike or on foot. From Germany, follow the Danube
eastward into Austria, across the fertile plains of the Wachau Valley,
vist monasteries perched atop hills between Melk and Krems. Wind past
castle ruins and apricot orchards before reaching the capital of Austria,
where you can take in a performance of the "Blue Danube" waltz. Or
continue across the Austria ‑ Slovak border passing vineyards on the
slopes of the Little Carpathian Mountains into the capital, Bratislava,
and then pedal through the delightful towns of Hungary. The cycling
route has been divided into sections between Passau and Vienna, and
Vienna and Budapest. Those with more time can take 2 weeks to cycle
through 4 countries, from Passau all the way to Budapest. Families will
be sure to enjoy the flat stretch of the Danube, between Linz and Vienna,
which is free of traffic and packed full of attractions. This stretch can
also be completed in 5 days for those who are short on time but still
want to experience the highlights of the Danube. For those who prefer
to travel by foot, explore the Wachau Valley on the Danube Walk.
