Self guided walk exploring the peaks and passes of
Austria's stunning Lake District
The alpine walking in Austria's Dachstein Alps is arguably some of the
most varied in Europe. The towering peaks of the Hoher Dachstein, high
mountain passes, alpine meadows and lakeside walks are all combined
in a surprisingly compact area. The pinnacles of Hoher Dachstein are
surrounded by glacial tongues and the big walls of the Gosaukamm
Mountains rise almost vertically from the valley floor. Then there are
the lakes and glacial tarns, more modest summits to scale and caves
to visit. There is a fairytale quality about the fjord like landscapes of
mountains diving into the diamante lakes, dense forests and idyllic
villages as well as the more usual alpine features of lush pastures
beneath craggy and icy peaks. The 2995m high peak of Hoher Dachstein
and the Hallstattersee form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This tour
will follow many of the attractive paths that trace their way between
villages, across mountainsides and around the lakes.

A stunning hike in the spectacular Austrian Lakes District
The UNESCO World Heritage listed Salzkammergut alpine region of
Austria encompasses 76 crystal clear lakes, the Dachstein Glacier, lush
summer meadows and impressive rock faces up to 3000 vertical metres
high. During this inspiring walk, there is ample time to appreciate the
natural beauty of the region and the alpine villages of wooden chalets
decorated with colourful window boxes while at night you will enjoy the
warm hospitality of your hosts. Staying in pensions and small hotels,
you can relax and enjoy the satisfying cuisine typical of the region.
There will be opportunities to sight fauna including ibex, chamois and
marmot along with numerous butterfly species which are endemic to
these high alpine meadows.
