Explore the Zagoria Villages in Greece's Pindos Mountains
The Greeks havemore reason thanmost to be proud of their architectural
heritage. However, far less well known than the great works of the
classical age, are the stone‑built villages of Zagoria, an unspoilt region
of the Pindos Mountains. This is a dramatic wilderness of 2500m peaks,
deep chasms, and extensive natural forests. The route is well marked
and the route notes are detailed. You may be lucky to spot a wolf, lynx,
bear or wild boar; all of which are still found in the Pindos. In Spring, the
mountain meadows are also a mass of colour with crocus, orchids and gentians. From the traditional stone
built village of Tsepelovo you will walk uphill to the highest village in Zagoria. During the week you will enjoy
some truly incredible scenery, especially when you walk into the 1000m deep Vikos Gorge. En route you can
swim in the crystal clear Voidomatis springs and there is the opportunity to walk to the beautiful Dragon Lake
on the edge of the great limestone cliff that borders the Aoos Valley.
ITINERARY: DAY 1 | Arrive Preveza or Ioannina airport, transfer to Tsepelovo 2 | Circular walk towards
the highest village in Zagoria, Vradeto, transfer to Tsepelovo (4-5hrs) 3 | Walk to the start of the Vikos Gorge
and climb to Vista (4.5hrs) 4 | Descend into the Vikos ravine and walk to Vikos village, transfer to Aristi (7hrs)
5 | Transfer to Vikos walk uphill and traverse the beautiful ravines to Papingo Village (4hrs) 6 | Walk to Mount
Astraka and the Astraka hut, optional ascent to Dragon Lake at 2100m (3/6hrs) 7 | Walk to Papingo, then
transfer to Ioannina (1.5hrs) 8 | Transfer to airport, trip concludes
