Cycle from Roncesvalles to Leon as you ride back through
history along the Camino de Santiago
For more than 1000 years the Camino de Santiago (or Way of St James /
Compostela Trail) has represented the adventure of a lifetime for pilgrims
and history buffs alike. While the 783km French route from Roncesvalles
to the Cathedral of Santiago has been well trodden by hiking boots and
horse hoofs through the centuries in more recent times the pilgrimage
route has become a natural magnet for cyclists seeking out iconic
routes. Beginning in the foothills of the Pyrenees and continuing along
the Camino to the historic cathedral city of Leon, this exhilarating ride,
which is the first half of the full cycle route along the Spanish Camino,
takes in some of the most breathtaking landscapes, unique monuments
and typical villages of northern Spain. En‑route, step out of the saddle
to savour the rich Spanish gastronomy, experiencing traditional regional
cuisine and excellent wines. Each night you'll stay in atmospheric hotels
offering comfort at the end of a hard day's cycle which is intrinsic to this
historic adventure.
ITINERARY: DAY 1 | Arrive Roncesvalles 2 | Cycle via Akerreta Zubiri to
Pamplona (42km) 3 | Cycle to Estella (42km) 4 | Via Monjardin Villamayor to
Logrono (50km) 5 | Cycle to Santo Domingo de la Calzada (49km) 6 | Cycle
to the city of Burgos (72km) 7 | Across the Meseta to Fromista (66km)
8 | Cycle to Sahagun (60km) 9 | On to Leon (58km) 10 | Trip concludes

Set off on the exciting ride from the cathedral city of Leon to the ultimate
destination for most modern day pilgrims on the Camino, Santiago de
Compostela, on this exciting cycling trip. This itinerary is Stage 2 of our
epic full length ride of the Spanish Camino. For more than 1000 years the
Camino de Santiago has represented the ultimate adventure for pilgrims and
history buffs alike. While the 783km French route from Roncesvalles to the
Cathedral of Santiago has been well trodden by hiking boots and horse hoofs
through the centuries in more recent times the pilgrimage route has become
a natural magnet for cyclists seeking out iconic routes. Beginning just over
half way along the route in the historic city of Leon, this exhilarating cycle
takes in some of the most breathtaking landscapes, unique monuments and
typical villages of northern Spain. There are some challenging days, such as
the O'Cebreiro Pass, but you will be more than rewarded when you savour
the rich Spanish gastronomy, traditional regional cuisine and excellent wines.
Each night you'll return to comfortable, atmospheric hotels, which at the end
of a hard day's cycle is intrinsic to this cycle itinerary.
ITINERARY: DAY 1 | Arrive Leon 2 | Cycle through Castilian landscapes
to Astorga (48km) 3 | Gentle uphill to the top of Foncebadón then cycle
through wine country to Villafranca (75km) 4 | A demanding cycle across
the mythical O Cebreiro pass (or optional taxi transfer) and downhill via
Sarria to Portomarín (57.5km or 85km) 5 | A more relaxing cycle through
Galicia's rural landscape to Arzúa (51km) 6 | A short but demanding cycle to
the Pórtico de la Gloria ('The Façade of Glory') at the Cathedral of Santiago
(38km) 7 | In Santiago de Compostela 8 | Trip concludes
