Based in a specially designed hikers hotel in Les Estables (1320m)
at the foot of Mont Mézenc, the giant of the Cévennes at 1725m, this
unique walking holiday offers a fine balance of activity and indulgence.
The village has the highest altitude of all the towns on the Central
Massif. Surrounded by ancient volcanoes including the famous Mont
Gerbier de Jonc (source of the Loire River), the region offers exceptional
natural sights including volcanic domes, deep gorges, vast valleys and
an abundance of flora and fauna, making it ideal for walking in the
company of a local guide. After the walk, explore the village, relax in the
garden, swim in the pool, visit the kitchen to witness the preparation of
the evening meal or take a sauna. An ideal trip for lovers of mountain
landscapes and the camaraderie of other travellers.

An extended walk off the beaten track in the Massif Central
in France
On the Massif Central above the broad valley of the Rhone lies a walker's
paradise of hills where the Ardeche, Loire and Haute Loire regions
meet. This is a watershed for some of France's great rivers, a land of
steeply terraced slopes, half‑hidden valleys and tumbling streams.
This is a place for the walking connoisseur. Large ruined farm‑houses
seem embedded into the landscape with the bleat of goats and call of
a wild bird are often the only sounds you will hear. Our Ardeche ramble
unfolds with views across the Doux Valley from Le Crestet. During the
week you will walk through orchards and visit towns set amongst rugged
hills. There is a rest day in the small market town of St. Bonnet le Froid.
In the late Spring you will walk through fields yellow with wild flowers.
The 10 day itinerary also includes a walk past the ruined Chateau de
Rochebonne overlooking the River Eyrieux, to the town of St. Martin de
Valamas situated in a narrow valley; and then a walk back St. Agreve
along a well‑graded former railway line.
ITINERARY: DAY 1 | Arrive Le Crestet 2 | Walk through through orchards
into wooded hills to Lamastre (3-4hrs) 3 | Walk to Lalouvesc via the pretty
village of Nozieres (6hrs) 4 | Walk to St Bonnet le Froid (6hrs) 5 | Rest day
in St. Bonnet-le-Froid or short circular walk in high woods and meadows
of the village (2-3hrs) 6 | A lightly undulating walk to St Agreve (5-6hrs)
7 | Walk to St. Martin de Valamas passing the dramatic ruins of the Chateau
of Rochebonne en route (4hrs) 8 | Return to St. Agrève (4hrs) 9 | Follow an
ancient mule-road to Lamastre (6hrs) 10 | Trip concludes
