Walk through the Luberon and the stunning scenery of
Regalon, and delight in the Provencal villages
The sublime light and scent of Provence has attracted artists for many
years. Walk the secret hills and the gorges of the Luberon dotted with
'Mas' (stone Provencal farmhouses) and ochre coloured hilltop villages.
Cross the tops of the Petit Luberon under azure skies; admire a fountain
that sings in Lourmarin and perhaps discover a Côtes du Rhône wine that
definitely appeals to your taste buds. This is an invitation to walk in the
scent of the Mediterranean Maquis and to witness the 'douceur de vivre',
the sweet life in the Luberon. The trip starts in the fabulous, historic city
of Avignon. During the trip you can contemplate the vast plain of the
Durance River, enjoy amazing views across the Durance valley and the
Alpilles range, and visit Lourmarin which is listed as 'one of the most
beautiful villages in France'. You will also visit the hamlet of Sivergues
whose 40 inhabitants' principal activities are lavender processing and
goatbreeding.

Follow in Van Gogh's footsteps and walk through painted
Provencal landscapes in the Alpilles
Vincent Van Gogh arrived in Arles in Provence after a 16 hour train ride
from Paris in February 1888. He then commenced the most productive
period of painting in his life. He fell in love with the area at once: Arles, the
Alpilles, blooming fields, Langlois drawbridges and abbey ruins. 'My God!'
he exclaimed, 'If I had only known of this country at the age of 25, instead
of coming here when I was 35.' This may express the feelings of many of
us today. Les Alpilles is a small massif standing out as its white peaks rise
apparently sheer from the plain of the Rhône valley. Its slopes are covered
i
n vineyards, as well as with olive and almond trees. Starting in Avignon and
walking along footpaths dotted with cypress trees and lone chapels we
follow Van Gogh's footsteps, through the many landscapes of the Alpilles
that he painted, from St‑Rémy to Les Baux‑de‑Provence and onto Arles.
