A cycling adventure in the historic Dordogne region in
southwest France
The Dordogne, as the French say, is a land with 'un peu de tout', a little
of everything; a gently meandering river, lush pastures, wine, walnuts,
geese, the warm southern sun and of course a web of country roads
linking the historic hamlets and towns, all just ideal for a stimulating
cycling holiday. From Souillac in the valley of the Dordogne River, the cycle
route follows tiny lanes and byroads, initially following the river, which
winds through a landscape of steep green wooded hills, patchwork fields
and terraced slopes. This area of France is rich in scenery, architecture,
history ‑ and of course has a famous gastronomic reputation, as this is
the home of the truffle! Spend two nights in Sarlat the capital of Black
Périgord; it is an exceptionally well‑preserved city. The second half of
the circuit is a little more rural and there is a chance to visit the world
famous Font de Gaume. Staying in a selection of hand picked hotels,
there is ample time to relax and enjoy the villages and scenery for which
the area is famous.
ITINERARY: DAY 1 | Arrive in Souillac 2 | Choice of two cycle routes
to Sarlat (32/33km) 3 | Optional circular cycles to Domme and Le Roque-
Gageac (28/31km) 4 | Visit the Chateau de Beynac en route to Les Eyzies
(26/41km) 5 | Optional cycle to Troglodyte Cave and onto the tomb of
Cro-Magnon Man (29km) 6 | Cycle Montignac with an optional canoe
trip (24/30km) 7 | Cycle to the famous caves of Lascaux, then to Souillac
(47/54km) 8 | Trip concludes

Walking in the Dordogne valley and surrounding hills
The Dordogne, as the French say, is a land with 'un peu de tout', a little
of everything; a gently meandering river, lush pastures, wine, walnuts,
geese, the warm southern sun and of course a web of trails and paths
making it ideal for a walking holiday. This 10 day walk begins in the
village of Meyssac and the route follows the GR480, across rolling
farmland and along woodland paths to Beaulieu sur Dordogne an area
of the Dordogne valley of outstanding natural beauty. From the pretty
village of Loubressac perched on a scarp with splendid views, you can
visit the wonderful caves of Padirac. From Carennac you will walk along
the picturesque route of the 'Cirque de Montvalent' to the delightful
village of Creysse.
ITINERARY: DAY 1 | Arrive Meyssac 2 | Walk to Beaulieu-sur-
Dordogne (7hrs) 3 | Walk to Port de Gagnac, visit the village of Gagnac en
route (5-6hrs) 4 | Walk to Autoire or Loubressac (4-5hrs) 5 | Two options to
Carennac, via the ruined castle at Taillefer or divert to take in the Gouffre
de Padirac (5-6hrs) 6 | Rest day in Carennac or optional loop walk (4-
5hrs) 7 | Walk to Gluges, and on to the ancient village of Creysse (6-7hrs)
8 | Walk to the tiny old village of Sarrazac (6-7hrs) 9 | Walk to Collonges
la Rouge or Meyssac, via the ancient village of l'Hopital St Jean (6-7hrs)
10 | Trip concludes
