Experience the lush plantations, mountains and white-
washed villages of exotic La Gomera
Due to its volcanic origins, the island's scenery is dramatic, mountainous,
very beautiful and different from anywhere in Europe. Hiking on the island
from high rocky mountains to cloud forest and banana plantations is an
ideal way to see the real Gomera. It is a relaxed island with a population
of around 20,000 people living mostly in the capital, San Sebastian, or the
villages of the north. La Gomera's highest point is the Alto de Garajonay at
1480 metres and there is very little flat land due to the deep ravines that cut
into the island from the central highlands. You will be walking virtually round
the island, experiencing a variety of landscapes from rocky to cultivated
terraces and banana plantations and into the rare laurisilva cloud forest, a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. So rugged is the island that pre telephones,
Gomerans developed a language of whistling to communicate from valley to
valley. With a little practice you can place an order for an ice cold beer or a
gin and tonic ready for your arrival ‑ just whistle!
