Wind your way through a medieval painting on this cycle
journey in southern Tuscany
For a more remote and wild taste of Tuscany try this cycle tour that takes
you to the south of the medieval city state of Siena. This should appeal
particularly to those who are looking for cycling a little more off the beaten
tourist trails and through more challenging terrain. There is a good mix
of landscapes along the journey including forests, vineyards, lakes and
of course famous fortified villages and hill towns such as Montalcino and
Montepulciano. Along the route there is ample time to taste the many
great local wines, explore the frescoes and treasures of the Benedictine
monastery at Monte Oliveto Maggiore, soothe any muscular aches at the hot
springs in Bagno Vignoni and of course relax and enjoy the many charming
Etruscan villages that line the route. This tour will suit reasonably fit cyclists
who are at home in hilly terrain and are accustomed to cycling around 50km
a day. Some off road sections are possible on this tour and good quality
mountain bikes with front suspension are available for this purpose.

Walk through classic Tuscan landscapes to discover

This walking tour in the Amiata Hills, a quiet area to the south of Siena,
is designed for those seeking a more challenging walk in the region. This
is an attractive remote landscape in which one of the noblest wines of
Italy is produced; the Brunello de Montalcino. There is an abundance of
hot springs, old castles and monasteries which bear witness to a glorious
history and keep your interest long after the walking has ended. The tour
begins in probably Europe's finest preserved medieval city ‑ Siena. Walk
over soft rolling ridges, through lonely pine or oak tree forests where
cypress lined tracks lead off to distant antiquated farmhouses and where
the hills are painted with vibrant pastel colours from the seasons. Historic
castles, medieval villages, vineyards, Romanesque buildings where the
chants of French Gregorian friars echo in the mystic atmosphere and the
hot springs at Bagno Vignoni all combine to make this one of our most
fascinating walks in Tuscany.
